Accelerated Healing with PRGF

Advanced Healing Therapy with PRGF

PRGF technology opens new perspectives in dentistry for tissue healing and is a valuable advancement in dental treatment to accelerate healing in most dental treatments. This is prepared by our talented dental team at the Perio & Implant Center.

Preparation takes about ten minutes and is done by drawing a small amount of your own blood, and processing your own body's healing cells.

This multipurpose plasma is used in many procedures at the Perio & Implant Center: extractions, bone regeneration, and dental implants all utilize this advance technological breakthrough, promoting faster healing with less discomfort.

Filling the area where a tooth has been removed with PRGF is done at the same time as the extraction. This seals the area, and promotes advanced healing. PRGF also possesses excellent elastic and haemostatic properties, which help reduce the inflammation and swelling.

On Placing a Dental Implant

Dr. Pechak may prefer a combination of PRGF with dental implants to promote better anchorage of the dental implant. Improves the properties of the implant site and accelerates high implant stability.

On Bone Defects

PRGF application during the reconstruction of bone defects results in a significantly faster bone regeneration and growth. The resulting bone tissue is compact and very stable. PRGF enhances bone regeneration due to its specific properties, some of which include its biocompatibility, biodegradability, resulting in the best results with the least amount of discomfort, and with faster healing you can get on with your life!

Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) is exactly as the name suggests. PRGF technology opens new perspectives in the area of human tissue regeneration and is a valuable tool to treat a wide range of tissue injuries.

Medicine is continually adopting novel therapies and less invasive procedures. The practice of surgery has been affected by the emergence of PRGF which has opened new avenues for therapeutic approaches because of its accessibility and repair capacity.

Why All the Excitement about PRGF?

PRGF permits the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate. During the healing process, the body rushes many cells and cell types to the wound in order to initiate the healing process. One of those cell types are platelets. Platelets perform many functions, including formation of a blood clot and release of growth factors (GF) into the wound. These growth factors function to assist the body in repairing itself by stimulating stem cells to regenerate new tissues. The more growth factors released into the wound, the more stem cells stimulated to produce new host tissue. Thus, one can easily see that PRGF permits the body to heal faster and more efficiently.

PRGF Has Many Clinical Applications

  1. Bone grafting for dental implants. This includes onlay and inlay grafts, sinus lift procedures, and ridge augmentation procedures.
  2. Repair bone defects created by the removal of teeth or small cysts.
  3. Repair of fistulas between the sinus cavity and mouth.

Advantages of PRGF

Safety: PRGF is a by-product of the patient’s own blood, so disease transmission is not an issue.

Convenience: PRGF can be generated in the doctor’s office while the patient is undergoing an outpatient surgical procedure, such as placement of dental implants.

Faster healing: The supersaturation of the wound with PRGF, and thus growth factors, produces an increase of tissue synthesis and thus faster tissue regeneration.

Cost effectiveness: Since PRGF harvesting is done with only a small amount of blood in the doctor’s office, the patient need not incur the expense of the harvesting procedure in a hospital or at the blood bank.

Ease of use: PRGF is easy to handle and actually improves the ease of application of bone substitute materials and bone grafting products by making them more manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions about PRGF

Is PRGF safe?

Yes. During the outpatient surgical procedure a small amount of your own blood is drawn out via the IV. This blood is then placed in the PRGF centrifuge machine and spun down. In less than 15 minutes, the PRGF is formed and ready to use.

Should PRGF be used in all bone grafting cases?

Not always. In some cases, there is no need for PRGF. However, in the majority of cases, application of PRGF to the graft will increase the final amount of bone present in addition to making the wound heal faster and more efficiently.

Will my insurance cover the costs?

Unfortunately not. The cost of the PRGF application is paid by the patient.

Can PRGF be used alone to stimulate bone formation?

No. PRGF must be mixed with either the patient’s own bone, a bone substitute material such as demineralized freeze-dried bone, or a synthetic bone product.

Are there any contraindications to PRGF?

Very few. Obviously, patients with bleeding disorders or hematologic diseases do not qualify for this in-office procedure. Check with your surgeon and/or primary care physician to determine if PRGF is right for you.
